REFRESH has successfully passed its GO/NO GO milestone!

This is another step towards the project’s goal of demonstrating a smart, circular system for managing end-of-use wind turbine blades.

This first milestone marks the successful transition from Phase 1 of the project to Phase 2.

The first phase focused on design and development of the REFRESH technologies and the business plan. Phase 2 includes deployment of the technologies developed in the first phase, design and manufacture of demonstrator products, and development of the traceability platform.

To obtain a GO to proceed with Phase 2 a number of tasks had to be completed satisfactorily. The REFRESH team met with the review panel in July to discuss the project’s progress and answer any questions. The review report and the positive ‘GO’ decision were received in October. The report noted that the results to date are very interesting and provide a basis for the industrial up-scaling of efficient blade recycling.

Phase 2 of the project is already underway and progressing fast. The REFRESH value chain is connected and products are being developed using the recycled materials.

The value chain:

  • Collection & cutting – ETAT9
  • Shredding & sorting – MTB
  • Recycling – GEES RECYCLING, GJENKRAFT, CIRCE, ENECOLAB
  • Demonstrator products – CETMA, ACCIONA, TECNALIA

Work on the traceability platform, covering the whole value chain, has also started. This is being developed by TECNALIA.

The technical work packages are supported by project coordinator RINA, and EuCIA, leader of the communication and dissemination activities.
